DESCRIPTION OF OUR CLAY BODIES:

NEW PRODUCT!  SIERRA GOLD

A 50/50 Blend of our Sandstone Buff and Silverstone. Firing range cone 4 - 10 with a Warm Oak color at cone 6 - 8 oxidation. Give it a try and let us know what you think!

  • Sandstone Buff

A high fire earthenware body which fires a warm toast color above cone 6.  It is a dark grey brown when reduction fired.  It can be fired as low as cone 06 to produce a soft warm colored earthenware which is suitable for sculpture or elementary school projects. This clay does work well for Raku or pit firing. When fired to cone 6 or above it is an excellent ovenware. It has good thermal shock properties.
  • Silverstone

This is a true high temperature stoneware body. We recommend that it be fired between cone 6 and cone 10, either in oxidation or reduction. It fires to a warm light cream color in oxidation, with a very fine iron speckle. It is a medium grey when reduced. This clay can be low fired for use in sculpture or school use. However, it will only become vitreous at higher temperatures. Glazes work well on silverstone in any kiln type; gas, electric, wood, or even Raku.
  • Redstone

This is a higher temperature dark red clay. We recommend firing between cone 4 and cone 8. As we have indicated before, clays can be fired at much lower temperatures, but they will not be as durable. Redstone is a smooth easy to throw clay. In oxidation it is a handsome brick red, in reduction it darkens to a black red. Because of the high iron content this clay can create exciting interactions with many glazes.
  • Sierra Red

This is a low fire red earthenware body. It contains a medium sized true grog. This is a popular clay for elementary school use. It fires in the cone 06 to cone 02 range. It works well with most cone 06 to cone 04 glazes that are available from ceramic suppliers.
  • Scupture Clays

Sandstone Buff and Silverstone are available as sculpture bodies. We add a medium grind true firebrick grog. This promotes better working characteristics for sculpture without objectionable roughness.
  • ABOUT OUR CLAYS:

When fired to recommended temperatures all of our clays will have an approximate twelve percent shrinkage. This will depend on your firing and working techniques. We use our own clays in our production and we are always happy to assist our customers if they have problems or questions. We also appreciate your comments and encourage you to share your experience and enjoyment of working with Quyle Clays.  Click here to comment.
